BENSALEM, PA – On June 22, 2003, the German – American community of Philadelphia and vicinity celebrated its 28th Annual German –American Day. Approximately 1500 guests attended this year’s event on the grounds of the United German Hungarian Club in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Proceeds of the event, sponsored by the Steuben Day Observance Association of Philadelphia and Vicinity, benefit the 33rd Annual German-American Steuben Parade that will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2003.

The Windjammer Band filled the afternoon with entertainment. In addition, there were performances by area Shuhplattler dancers groups, area Kindergruppen, and area choral groups. German food and drink was also available for all.

Local dignitaries in addition to the Presidents of the various area German clubs joined the festivities. They included Bucks County Councilman Bill Grove, of Perkasie Borough, and Philadelphia Councilman Frank Rizzo. Councilman Rizzo brought with him an official proclamation from the City Council of Philadelphia, proclaiming June 22, 2003 German-American Day in the City of Philadelphia.

The highlight of the afternoon was the crowning of the 2003-2004 Cornflower Queen and her court. The Cornflower Queen represents the Philadelphia German-American Community at various functions within the United Sates and in Germany. This year’s court is comprised of: Miss Monika Klein, Second Princess; Miss Hope Knight and Miss Nadia Stadnycki, First Princes; and Miss Mary LeGierse, Cornflower Queen.
