The Competition begins again!

GUIDELINES for Candidate, with the changes of May 2010

• Be a member of the sponsoring club or organization
• Woman, single, 18 to 27 years of age by September 30, 2012
• Ability to speak ‘survival level’ German at least: please inquire if unclear
• Will come to interviews, events, as well as write a Baron von Steuben Essay.
• The First Princess becomes Queen the following year. The other princesses are members of the Court, receive recognitions and may compete again.
• Be ready and enthusiastic about representing the German community of Philadelphia duringthe year of office; is guided by the Queen Selection Committee throughout and aided by the club’s CONTACT PERSON: explains the competition and helps generally during the year of her reign: see guidelines above and benefits below.

BENEFITS TO CANDIDATES

• Contacts to Philadelphia’s German Community as well as foreign guests.
• A traditional DIRNDL: given by the sponsoring organization.
• A ball gown: from the Steuben Day Observance Association.
• All contestants are acknowledged at the official crowning German Day June 24, 2012 and receive a monetary award at the end of their reign, German Day 2013. The Court serves a full year.
• Attending the NYC Banquet before their parade and the parade itself the next day.
• These and other privileges and responsibilities are part of the Agreement with the Steuben Day Observance Association.
• The new Court becomes a part of the circle of friends of the German Community and past Courts.

WHAT TO DO

After the organization has identified a candidate, a CONTACT PERSON within that organization is chosen for the whole selection process. This person is very important to the candidate and the Association’s work of ambassadorship. The candidate sends in the application which the CONTACT PERSON signs, and encloses a $60 check made out to: Steuben Day Observance Association of Philadelphia and Vicinity.

TIMETABLE

• May 1, earlier, please: Applicant identified, application due by deadline
• Essay Writing after May 20, 2012: Time and  place TBA
• June 24, 2012 German Day: the final competition and judging at the Cannstatter Volksfest Verein.
